The purpose of this program is to connect AAR members, particularly early career scholars, with a mentor who has extensive experience in publishing — with academic journals, books, trade, and public scholarship, etc.
Our first mentor is SB Rodríguez-Plate, current chair of AAR Publications committee. SB has worked as an editor in journal publishing for 25 years including associate editor of Literature and Theology (1999-2003), co-founder and managing editor of Material Religion (2004-2020), and editor of CrossCurrents (2001-present). They have also edited several book-length volumes with a variety of publishers (including Routledge, Bloomsbury, Oxford UP, Palgrave) and their own authored books (Columbia UP, Beacon, Routledge, and Black Dog). The mentoring cohort will meet via Zoom to discuss a variety of topics related to publishing.
The mentoring cohort will include 8-12 early-career scholars. All mentees must have active AAR memberships and submit an application in order to join the program. The call for applications ends on March 3, 2025.
