Board of Directors

The Board of Directors consists of twelve members elected by the membership and the AAR Executive Director, who serves in a nonvoting role. The Board of Directors governs the organization through strategic planning, policy development, assessment, and advocacy, and it oversees the AAR’s working groups.

Committees and Working Groups

The AAR’s many working groups include juries for AAR grant and award programs, specially commissioned task forces, and numerous committees that serve the needs of AAR constituents, public programming, and the academic study of religion.

Policies and Key Documents

Key AAR documents include our bylaws, statements and resolutions passed by our Board of Directors, financial documents, and information on privacy and AAR elections.

Board Statements and Endorsements

Enhancing the public understanding of religion is a key part of the AAR’s mission. This means that at times the AAR makes public pronouncements, which can happen in several ways. The AAR Board of Directors may issue statements on public matters that relate directly to academic freedom and the public understanding of religion. The AAR Board of Directors may also write directed letters about specific matters. At other times, AAR members submit resolutions directly to the full membership for consideration at the Annual Business Meeting.

AAR Regions

The AAR’s nine regions are each represented by a Chief Regional Officer who promotes the work of the regional group and serves on the AAR Regions Committee.
