What is your area of expertise or field of study?
I’m an Octavia Butler scholar and also a scholar of Theopoetics, and Theology and Culture.
Why did you get involved with AAR, and how is your work aligned?
I got involved in AAR because I wanted to expand my network of scholars and find mentors as a junior scholar. Because my work is interdisciplinary, connecting with religion scholars around the country keeps me open to new perspectives and ideas.
What is your favorite AAR member benefit, and how has it helped your career?
When I was a doctoral student, I participated in the mentorship program. I had a great mentor who helped me find some amazing opportunities. I highly recommend that everyone take advantage of the mentorship programs.
What is one piece of advice you’d give to a first-time Annual Meeting attendee?
Everyone in this field is smart. Distinguish yourself by being kind.
What book is on your nightstand that you’re reading or intend to read in the future?
Parable of the Talents by Octavia E. Butler.
What do you enjoy doing outside of work?
Going to art shows and museums, singing karaoke, and catching up on a show.
