The AAR is saddened to share that the Rev. Dr. Donald W. Shriver Jr., acclaimed ethicist and president emeritus of Union Theological Seminary, died July 28, 2021 at 93. Shriver wrote fervently of the need for white Americans to face and repent of their racist past and urged clergy to root out racism within their institutions.

From an account of Shriver’s career:

“‘Don Shriver saved Union Theological Seminary,’ said Dr. Larry Rasmussen, a professor emeritus at the seminary. ‘That should serve as tribute enough. But more than that, he navigated changes that put in place a vibrant future Union, markedly different from the institution he joined in 1975.'”
