Statement by the AAR Board of Directors, in Boston on November 21, 2025

Also Endorsed By SBL Council

As we are gathered in Boston for the Annual Meeting of the world’s largest professional society of religious studies scholars, we are concerned about, and oppose, plans of ICE (Immigration and Customs Enforcement) to detain/arrest people in places of worship, or other infringements on religious freedom.

We affirm the dignity of all persons, and we are in solidarity with civic, educational, and religious organizations that are protesting these planned inhuman actions.

All people in the United States, regardless of immigration status, have certain rights and protections under the U.S. Constitution. We encourage our members to learn about, and share information regarding our rights, and to collaborate to keep AAR members safe and to protect the most vulnerable in our communities.

Special Session

We invite you to a special “Emergency Session: ICE Enforcement in Sacred Spaces,” co-chaired by Lloyd Barba and Jennifer Scheper Hughes, on Saturday 11/22, 4:00pm-5:00pm in Hynes room 208. Description: In response to threats of increasing immigration enforcement including on and around sacred grounds, this late breaking session convenes scholars and activists to reflect on how academic institutions including the AAR can effectively respond. Please join us for an emergency town hall to discuss concrete steps that we can take to protect the most vulnerable in our communities.

Red Cards

The Immigrant Legal Resource Center created ‘red cards’ to help people assert their rights and defend themselves against ICE’s unconstitutional actions. While thousands of religion scholars are gathered in Boston this weekend, we will have ‘red cards’ in English/Spanish available (go to the AAR booth in the exhibit hall or to the membership desk, next to the registration desk). Please pick up some cards for yourself and/or to share with others who can use them. Or you can print your own: https://www.ilrc.org/redcards#print.
