AAR Award for Best Work in Theoretical, Philosophical, or Critical Studies
Award recognizes the best book-length work (from any period) that advances interpretation, constructive critique or reflection on religion, emphasizing conceptual, ethical, political, or aesthetic questions. Works in this category may engage textual, historical, or empirical materials but are distinguished by their primarily theoretical or reflexive orientation.
The AAR Lawrence H. Mamiya Excellence in Public Service Award
Awarded to an AAR member whose research and activism betters the world through activism, public policy-making, community service and deep engagement with the wider public (next award: 2027)
AAR Religion and the Arts Award
Presented to an artist, performer, critic, curator, or scholar who has made a recent significant contribution to the arts and religion.
Martin E. Marty Award for the Public Understanding of Religion
This award recognizes extraordinary contributions to the public understanding of religion.
The AAR James H. Cone Excellence in Mentoring Award
Recognizes extraordinary mentors and the importance of formal and informal mentoring in the development of scholars (next award in 2028)
AAR Distinguished Service Award
Awarded to persons whose dedication and continuing efforts of service to the AAR have been exemplary.
The AAR Katie Geneva Cannon Excellence in Teaching Award
This award recognizes the importance of teaching and honors outstanding teaching in the field.
