About
The Religion and the Arts Travel Grant, funded through the generosity of Diane Apostolos-Cappadona, is awarded annually to a graduate student studying religion and the arts who is without institutional support to attend the November Annual Meeting. The grant offsets travel costs associated with attending the November Annual Meeting: registration fees (including tours and workshops), hotel room, transportation, and meals up to $1,500.
Criteria
- Current AAR membership at the time of application and throughout the grant period. Preference will be given to applicants with consistent membership.
- Current status as a graduate student
- Enrolled in a Religion and the Arts degree program or writing a thesis or dissertation on Religion and the Arts
- Lack of access to institutional or external funding
Late, emailed, or incomplete applications and/or required materials cannot be accepted.
Application Requirements

Applicants must provide the following information on the application form:
- Brief bio including name, institutional affiliation
- Description of field of study/program and research interests, especially around Religion and the Arts
- Statement of plans and involvement with religion and the arts opportunities at the November Annual Meeting; participation on the program is a plus
- Statement of financial need that describes the following:
- Current income
- Estimated costs to attend the AAR November Annual Meeting (including airfare, ground transportation, parking, housing, meals, and other expenses)
- Any institutional or external travel support available to the applicant
Applicants should be prepared to upload the following required materials in PDF format:
- Letter of recommendation from professor, chair, or director confirming the topic of your thesis or dissertation is on Religion and the Arts
- Current CV
Winner Notification and Expectations
- The members of the AAR’s Annual Meeting Travel Grants Jury select the grant winner.
- Notification of application status is typically made by late June.
- The grant will be distributed via wire transfer after the November Annual Meeting.
- The grantee must submit receipts for expenses.
- By January 31 of the following calendar year, the grantee must submit an expense report along with a detailed report about their contributions to the November Annual Meeting and the benefits of Annual Meeting attendance for their scholarship and vocation.
