Summary

In the United States, an overwhelming majority of students will go through 12 years of public education and not have a single course on the study of religion. Yet, religion continues to influence culture and society in politics, education, economics, and numerous other social arenas. How is religion not included in the topics deemed necessary in in K-12 education?

Join us for a stimulating discussion on the topic of K-12 education in religion – or lack thereof – and the implications of religious illiteracy and what can be done about it.

Panelists

Erik Owens | Owens is director of the International Studies Program and professor of the practice in Theology in the Morrissey College of Arts and Sciences, and affiliate faculty in the Formative Education Department of the Lynch School of Education and Human Development, at Boston College.

 

 

Kate Soules | Soules is an education researcher and independent consultant specializing in religious literacy and religious diversity education. Soules is the co-founder and Executive Director of the Religion and Education Collaborative, and interdisciplinary network of scholars and practitioners working at the intersections of religion and schooling.

Gina Robinson | Robinson is the associate director at the Wabash Center for Teaching and Learning in Theology and Religion. She is a member of the AAR’s Committee on Teaching and Learning.
