The Database of Religious History is seeking scholars – including and especially graduate students and postdocs – to complete a poll on Supernatural and Interpersonal Gratitude Experiences and Expressions Across Cultures.
Respondents will receive a $250 USD digital gift card of their choice (including universally accepted Visa cards, in addition to several other vendors from our list), as well as authorship credit for their contribution to an important and growing open science resource: The Database of Religious History.
Cultures may be modern or historical groups (e.g., a particular group in the ancient Mediterranean or medieval China). Crucially, each culture/group must be defined in time and space (i.e., by assigning it a date range and one or more polygons on world map).
Eligibility Citeria
- Scholars with an academic affiliation from any country can respond
- Scholars from across disciplines in the humanities (e.g., history) and social sciences (e.g., anthropology) are encouraged to participate
- Respondents will choose a culture based on their expertise and/or interest and create a culture-specific entry. Your culture does not have to be a religious group per se, but you will be asked to include any relevant religious/spiritual index tags for that group.
- Respondents may create one of two types of entries:
- Personal expertise entry: You, as the expert, have deep historical and/or anthropological knowledge of a culture (e.g., someone who has spent part or all of their career studying this culture). You will answer the questions based on primary texts, ethnographic notes, field-interactions, local informants, etc.
- Secondary-source entry: for non-experts, such as graduate students, who may have some knowledge of and/or experience with a culture but base their answers on thorough reading of primary texts and/or secondary sources
- We allow and encourage multiple entries from multiple authors (i.e., multiple, co-authored entries)
- Deadlines:
- Respondents must sign up and create an initial entry by June 30th, 2025
- Poll answers must be completed by September 1, 2025
- Note: Total number of respondents will be capped at our budget maximum, so sign up early to ensure your paid contribution.
