2021 Call for Committee Nominations

Each year, members of the American Academy of Religion are invited to nominate persons to fill open positions on AAR Standing Committees and Juries. AAR Members may nominate themselves or others.

Nominations and required supporting materials must be received by 11:59 pm Eastern Time, on Tuesday, June 1, 2021. Late or incomplete submissions cannot be accepted.

Open Positions

This call for nominations is for open positions on the following AAR committees and juries, with service beginning on January 1, 2022:

Committees

• Academic Labor and Contingent Faculty Committee
• Academic Relations Committee
• Committee on Teaching and Learning
• Committee on the Public Understanding of Religion
• International Connections Committee
• Status of Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, Intersex, & Queer Persons in the Profession Committee
• Status of Racial and Ethnic Minorities in the Profession Committee
• Status of Women in the Profession Committee
• Theological Education Committee

Grant and Award Juries

• Book Award Juries
• Graduate Student Awards Jury
• Journalism Awards Jury
• Research Grants Jury
• Religion and the Arts Award Jury

Required Nomination Materials

To be eligible for consideration, nominations for all open positions must be made in writing, and must include the following supporting materials:

1. A description of the nominee's academic and professional interests
2. A summary of the nominee's activity in the AAR or service to the field
3. A statement describing the nominee's interest in the position
4. A current copy of the nominee's CV

Please note: If you nominate someone and do not have the supporting material at the time of the nomination, you need to contact your nominee to make sure that person submits the additional supporting material. Your nominee will need to submit their materials via the online submission form. Due to the volume of nominations submitted, the AAR staff is not able to notify the nominee and/or solicit the nominee for the supporting material.

Nominations without supporting materials are incomplete and cannot be considered.

Submit a Nomination

• Current AAR Members may submit nominations.
• All nominations and supporting materials must be submitted electronically through the AAR’s online Nomination Submission System.
• AAR Members will need to login in with their AAR Member ID to access the nomination form. 
• Nominations must be received by 11:59 pm Eastern Time on Tuesday, June 1, 2021. Late or incomplete submissions cannot be accepted.

Nominations Review

• The AAR President, staff, and committee and jury chairs, will review all complete nominations submitted during the open call.
• As part of her presidential duties, AAR President Marla Frederick, will make appointment selections during summer 2021.
• Presidential appointments are made on the basis of committee needs and goals, diversity of AAR volunteer leadership, and special initiatives taken by the President. In general, new appointments are not made for members who are currently serving on an AAR committee or jury.
• Nominees who have been selected for appointment will be notified by November 1, 2021.
