Employment Information Services
As the learned societies representing the most comprehensive membership in the fields of the study of religion and biblical literature, the American Academy of Religion and the Society of Biblical Literature sponsor a variety of services that assist individuals and institutions in the employment process.
Career Services consists primarily of two interrelated efforts, Job Postings and the Job Center at the Annual Meetings.
Openings: Employment Opportunities for Scholars of Religion
Published online each month, Openings is the most comprehensive public record of job listings for credentialed scholars in religion. Openings is available free to individual members of AAR and SBL, without subscription.

Important Note: If the hiring institution is in the U.S. and you can envision hiring a foreign national for the position, please note that the Department of Labor and, later, the Bureau of Citizenship and Immigration Services requires a print advertisement of the position. In this case, we encourage you to list the position in one print issue of the Chronicle of Higher Education as well as with us.
Employment Trends in the Field
To get a more accurate picture of employment trends in the field, we have expanded our data collection efforts. To this end, Employment Information Services created a web-based survey to track hirings by specialization and to collect demographic information on job candidates. The surveys are sent each April to candidates and employers who registered for the previous November’s Job Center. Longitudinal results will reveal information about what aspects of a candidate’s personal and professional life impact his/her ability to receive interviews and job offers.

EISC Guidelines
Candidates and employers, by use of the EISC and its services, agree to read and uphold the following policies and procedures:
- Every job opportunity for which interviews are to be held at the Annual Meetings should be advertised in Openings.
- All interviews at the Annual Meetings, including interviews by pre-arranged appointments, should be conducted in space arranged by the Job Center.
- No interviews are to be conducted in sleeping rooms.
- Interviewees should be notified in a timely fashion of the location of the interviews.
- Interviewers should communicate in writing to interviewees that, if they request to be interviewed in a different place, it will be arranged without prejudice to their candidacies.
- If any candidate requests within a reasonable time that an interview be moved to a different venue, the interviewers should make a good faith effort to comply, and notification should be given to the EISC staff that such a change was requested and what the disposition was.
- Interviewees and interviewers are free to enlist the mediatorial services of the EISC staff in the event of differing views of what compliance with these guidelines entails.
- Grievances of any kind regarding interviews conducted at the Annual Meetings may be filed with the EISC staff and will be referred to the Career Services Advisory Committee for consideration.
- Interviewers should notify interviewees that they must be Annual Meetings registrants. Interviewees are not required to register for the Job Center.
Affirmative Action Statement
It is expected that all employers will adhere in good faith to applicable federal, state, and local regulations concerning affirmative action, equal employment opportunity, and non-discrimination. Furthermore, employers are encouraged to take affirmative action initiatives. Institutions, if any, to which these regulations do not apply, or institutions, if any, at which religion has been determined to be a bona fide occupational qualification should state this in their job announcements. In addition, job announcements should state the criteria by which candidates will be evaluated (major field, supplementary fields, degree(s), experience, publications, etc.). It is further expected that candidates will be evaluated for hiring, promotion and tenure on the basis of appropriate professional credentials, qualifications and affirmative action considerations.
