An online finding list of academic doctoral programs of religion and theology at accredited universities, seminaries, and theological schools in North America.

Where does the data come from?

In 2003 the AAR commissioned a web-based study of all academic doctoral programs in the U.S. and Canada. The results are presented in this searchable database.

How do I use this service?

Users can search for institutions that have a program in which the academic study of religion (broadly construed) is a central focus.

Institutions are coded by the U.S. Department of Education as "Public" or "Private and Non-Profit."

Religious Affiliation:

The U.S. Department of Education codes religious affiliation for private institutions. You may search by Catholic, Jewish, Protestant, and Other.

Carnegie Classification:

The Carnegie Classification of Institutions of Higher Education is the leading typology of American colleges and universities by which institutional diversity in U.S. higher education is most commonly described.
