In Memoriam
Otto Maduro
April 14, 1945 – May 9, 2013
It is with great sadness that the AAR announces the passing of Otto Maduro, Professor of Religion at Drew University and the AAR's immediate past President. A philosopher and sociologist of religion, Professor Maduro was the author of more than 100 books and articles in a dozen languages. First and foremost, his work focused on the interrelation of religious traditions (the Christian churches in particular) and the yearnings for liberation among the economically, racially, culturally, and/or sexually oppressed peoples. He was also interested in peace studies, social and ecological justice, epistemologies, and sexualities, and maintained a lifelong interest in indigenous musical traditions, particularly jazz.
Otto's work on behalf of the AAR, his students, and his beloved Hispanic Theological Institute was characterized by his humility, warm regard for his colleagues, and determined sense of justice. During his presidency, plans were laid that will issue in two important developments in the coming weeks — the finalization of policies dealing with how we work with hotel labor organizations, and the restructuring of our investment portfolio in a more socially responsible manner. Otto is survived by his wife, Nancy Noguera, and their son, Mateo.
We have begun making plans to honor Otto and his work at our 2013 Annual Meeting in Baltimore. We will notify the membership about these plans as soon as possible. In the meantime, please join the AAR staff and Board in keeping Otto's family and friends in your thoughts and prayers in this time of loss.
